Sophie calls it out

Pat Murphy, publisher of the San Francisco Sentinel, wrote a story on a National Women's Political Caucus (SF) event on the state of public safety in San Francisco. Police Chief Heather Fong, District Attorney Kamala Harris, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes, and Supervisor Sophie Maxwell sat on the panel.

Fong, Hayes, and Harris have gotten national coverage since the fate of our public safety in SF is in the hands of three smart, powerful women, a unique situation in our country. (The rest of the country should be so lucky.)

According to Pat, during the panel Supervisor Maxwell called out the racism in our city. She noted,

Blood runs in the street, racism lives hearty in San Francisco, and San Francisco is not a progressive city, all woman Supervisor Sophie Maxwell declined the deadpan--Oh, I've said it before. You just haven't heard me," Maxwell told the Sentinel, following panel discussion on State of San Francisco hosted by the National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) of San Francisco.

Yep. She is right. And today there will be an event at 6PM in the Castro at Harvey Milk Plaza to highlight racism in the bars in the LGBT community. Thanks to And Castro for All, racism and gender discrimination has been well documented and hopefully Les Natali will be held accountable for his racist policies.

And maybe folks will listen and realize that it isn't just about Les Natali. San Francisco is not a progressive city until racism is addressed.

But with folks like Calvin Gipson and John Newsom, activists from And Castro for ALL, doing the work they do, I still hold out hope...
