Today was the day that every new teacher dreads. If a school is underenrolled, classes are merged or “consolidated.”

This means that less teachers are needed. The newest teachers with the less seniority are then let go-four weeks into the school year after all districts have hired.

Some lucky teachers get moved to a school that needs teachers. Others get long-term substitute jobs. Last year, one new teacher got consolidated out of an elementary school, was sent to a middle school and then spent the last semester in a high school. She left and got a teaching job with Hayward Unified School District this year.

I would like to send my best wishes to those who got consolidated today. I hope that you land back on your feet-and find the teaching job of your dreams.
