Grants #5 for Week of Dec. 31-January 7 (edit this)
Due to the holiday season, there hasn’t been any announcements of new grants that I could find in my research. But here are two foundations that do give grants to public schools in San Francisco.
1. The San Francisco Foundation, Attention: Dr. Sandra Hernandez, 225 Bush Street, Ste. 500, San Francisco, CA 94104, intent to apply email: apps@sff.org, www.sff.org (This is the largest foundation funding education in SF.)
Deadline: June and December for Intent to Apply; Feb. and August for full proposal approval.
Focus of Interest: Funding priorities include school improvement, youth development, early childhood education and family support. Areas of special emphasis are: 1) programs that address the developmental and academic needs of the whole child, especially those from low-income and culturally and linguistically diverse families; 2) strategies that strengthen parental participation in children’s development and education; 3) programs emphasizing respectful, engaging and personalized relationships betwen adults, children and youth and that promote a sense of belonging; 4) programs that address equity and access to a quality education for underserved children, and culturally responsive approaches that promote intra- and inter-cultural understanding; 5) innovative approaches that can be replicated and influence public policy, and 6) strategies that promote inter-agency collaboration and multidisciplinary approaches.
Types of support: Employee matching gifts; fellowships; general/operating support; program development; program-related investments/loans; scholarships to individuals, and technical assistance.
Limitations: Giving limited to the San Francisco Bay Area. No support for religious purposes, or medical, academic or scientific research. No grants to individuals (except scholarships and fellowships designated by a donor) or for conferences or one-time events.
Application Process: Submission to an Intent to Apply Form is required for full proposal determination by foundation; only organizations that receive “encouraged” proposal notifications may submit a full proposal. Visit foundation website for application forms and additional guidelines. “How to Apply” workshops are held at the foundation each month. Visit website or call to register. Application form is required.

2. The Milken Family Foundation, Attention: Richard Sandler, Executive VP, 1250 4th Street, 3rd Floor, Santa Monica, CA 90401, (310) 570-4800, admin@mff.org, www.mff.org
Applications: Application not accepted. Given primarily in San Mateo and to a limited degree in San Francisco. Officers are Ellen Michelson, President; Michael M. Michelson, VP; Susan P. Schoenthaler, CFO and Treasurer, and Mary S. Callender, Executive Director.
Deadline: None
Focus of Support: The foundation advances its mission primarily through its work in education and medical research. In education, the foundation is committed to stengthening the profession by recognizing and rewarding outstanding education, and by expanding their professional leadership and policy influence; attracint, retaining and motivating the best talent to the teaching profession; stimulating creativity and productivity among educators and students of all ages; fostering the involvement of both family and the community in schools, and helping vibrant communities, especially by involving young people whoh ave special needs or live in neighborhoods considered disadvantaged, in school based programs that contribute to the revitalization of their community and to the well-being of its residents.
Types of Support: Mike’s Math Club-The club is a curriculum enrichment program that shows elementary school student sthat math can be useful and entertaining. The Math Club Team consists of full-time teacher-mentors who pay regular class-time visits to hundreds of students in public schools in California.
Selected grants: $521,204 to Madision Elementary School, Phoenix, AZ and $361,574 to Beaufort County School District in SC.
