Three years ago, a school auditorium was overfilled with people demanding a home for the Day Laborers program.

After three long years and several setbacks, the Day Laborers will finally be moving into their new home at 3358 Cesar Chavez. Construction should be completed in another three weeks-but they could use funds to complete it.

The Day Laborers’ program is 15 years old-and most of the time they worked out of a trailer at Franklin Square. Without running water, there was not a restroom for people to use. A doctor who volunteer each week to look at laborers who needed medical attention, talked about how she couldn’t wash her hands between treating different patients.

Local activists such as Anamaria Loya and Renee Saucedo lead the way. But the real success to the program are the laborers trying to find work and in many cases, create a new life in San Francisco. Their good work has made the program so successful.

At the program’s 15th birthday this weekend, children were dancing to the music as their parents talked with their neighbors. People who have used to be part of the Day Laborers’ program were talking to people who will be lining up for work on Monday.

While the Day Laborers’ program has a new home, the work continues. You can help complete the Day Laborer program complete their new home by sending a donation to: La Raz Centro Legal, Attention: Anamaria Loya, 474 Valencia Street, #295, San Francisco, 94103.
