Mercury News

The attorney for the man the prosecution says strangled a transgender Newark teenager in 2002 says Gwen Araujo provoked the defendants.

Michael Thorman, Michael Magidson’s attorney, said Gwen “lied to them to get them to have sex with her.'’

The 17-year-old “had no respect for these people,'’ Thorman said, referring to his client and co-defendants Jason Cazares and Jose Merel during his closing statement today in a Hayward courtroom.

After describing various sexual acts with the defendants initiated by the victim, Thorman asked jurors “that’s not deception? That’s not provocation?'’

Ugly stuff. Cecilia Chung from the Transgender Law Center and others are planning a press conference at the LGBT Center as soon as the verdict comes out. Stay Tuned. Or call her at 415-865-0184 for more information.
