San Francisco for Rent: What are the Pros and Cons of Renting in SF? (Part
One)
Nearly 65% of San Francisco’s apartments are occupied by renters — making
the relationship between housing owners and residents an important one for
many.
Tenant advocacy groups receive thousands of calls a month. Issues range from
attempted lease buyouts to rent adjustments exceeding rent control limits to
buildings in disrepair. In addition, the largest residential landlord in San
Francisco is accused of “intimidation”, “retaliation”, and “lawlessness” in
a City Attorney’s lawsuit.
On the other hand, many property owners struggle with non-paying tenants and
much worse. That said, associations representing building owners and
property managers are active in the community to create a positive
relationship between their membership and the public they serve.
What rights and resources do tenants and landlords have? What challenges do
people face when looking for rental properties?
Host Yumi Wilson will discuss these issues and more with our panel:
Guests:
* Ted Gullicksen, manager, San Francisco Tenants Union
http://www.sftu.org/
* Janan New, executive director, San Francisco Apartment Association
http://www.sfaa.org/
* Yvonne Mere, deputy city attorney, City of San Francisco
* Adam Martin, journalist, The San Francisco Examiner

This is the first in a two part series about the pros and cons of renting in
San Francisco. The next show will focus on how the rights of tenants and
owners impact the city’s population. We will also discuss what variables
drive residents to rent even though they may have the financial resources to
buy.
