The San Francisco Board of Education announced that summer school has been severely cut, due to the state budget cuts.

This summer, only fifth graders who are below basic or far below basic are eligible for summer school in the elementary grades. Newcomer fifth grade students can participate in summer school and students in the Migrant Education Program (preK to fifth grade) are also eligible for summer school as well as special education students whose IEP identifies the need for summer school. The elementary school summer school program will be at Cesar Chavez Elementary School at 22nd and Shotwell.

Middle school summer school will include current 6th and 7th graders who are tested at below or far below basic on the California Standards Test, a Special Educaiton student whose IEP provides for an extended year (ESY), is in the migrant education program, and/or is being recommended for retention (kept back a grade).

The middle school program will be at Francisco Middle School in North Beach.

High school summer school is more open to students than elementary and middle school summer programs. The eligibility includes, students who have not passed one or both parts of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE), have performed Below Basic or Far Below Basic on the California Standards Test, is designated as a newcomer, has extended school year (ESY) indicated on the IEP, needs to repeat F courses, is recommended for retention or retained, or is a senior who will graduate July 2008.

The high school summer school program will be at Burton High School in Portola.

Summer school will be June 28-July 13 for elementary students and June 28-July 25 for middle and high school students.
