Get Ready For GOTV (Get Out The Vote)
Just 2 weeks to election day—so far so good but a lot to do this week and in the next few weeks. We’ll step up phonebanking, non-profit housing groups have organized a No on 98 Rally, we’ll deliver literature in the Haight-Ashbury–a key base neighborhood, and Carnaval this weekend provides a great flyering opportunity. We need to make sure we do a big push these last two weeks—landlords have $5 million in their campaign account and will be hitting us hard in the final two weeks, by mail, radio and probably on TV. We’ve done a great job so far: over 80,000 pieces of literature have been delivered door to door, we’ve called thousands of renters, mailed to 90,000 absentee renters and distributed thousands of flyers. But we can’t sit back while $5 million is thrown at us!
Phonebanking
Absentee voters have had their ballots for almost 2 weeks, so calling up absentee renter voters is a great way to reach many tenants directly. Especially if you are unable to do neighborhood literature drops, phonebanking is a great way to help. Phonebanking this week:
Wednesday, 5/21 /08 at Tenants Together, 995 Market St (at 6th) #1202, Starts at 5:30 PM (Also tonight, Monday 5/19 at 5:30, if you get this on time)
Thursday, 5/22/08 at Housing Rights Committee, 427 South Van Ness (at 16th), Starts at 6 PM
SEIU Phonebanking, Monday-Thursday, starting at 6 PM, 350 Rhode Island (at 16th) (Phonebanking 98 and Yes on A & B)
Save Our City Rally
Community Housing Partnership, Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, and Chinatown Community Development Center are joining forces for a rally at Civic Center to do just this—and we invite you to join us. After some inspiring speeches, we’ll travel to the basement of City Hall to vote early—sending a clear and dramatic message that we’re not falling for it—we are going to defend our communities!
WHEN: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., May 21, 2008
WHERE: Steps of San Francisco City Hall on Polk Street between Grove and McAllister
EVENT DETAILS: At 11:30, we will gather on the steps of City Hall to rally and hear local leaders and advocates speak out against Prop. 98. After the speakers are finished, attendees will go directly into City Hall to submit early absentee votes against the measure.
Haight-Ashbury Literature Drop Saturday, May 24, 11 AM
This week we will be going back to the Haight-Ashbury. The Haight, along with the Mission, are where most of our No on 98 votes will come from. We need to get the word out big-time in these neighborhoods so we can get as many renters to the polls as possible. We will meet Saturday, May 24, 11 AM at 1015 Masonic (right at Oak). Any bus to the Haight gets you there. We’ll be joined by the Sierra Club and get literature and precinct maps. There’s a lot of precincts to cover so we need as many people as possible. Please come and bring a friend!
Carnaval Flyering May 25
This weekend is Carnaval–thousands will be at the festival and parade on Sunday. We’re focusing flyering on Sunday, when the parade is, but people can do Saturday as well. We have flyers in English & Spanish. The festival is Saturday & Sunday on Harrison between 24th & 16th Streets (between 10 AM and 3 PM is probably best for flyering; too early and the crowd is sparse, too late and the crowd is not really paying attention to serious stuff). The parade starts at 24th & Bryant at 9:30 AM, goes up 24th St., turns on Mission and goes down to 16th Street. Mission is where most people watch it. There’s a few ways to get flyers and hook into this:
Get Flyers at:
SF Tenants Union, 558 Capp St., Sunday May 25, 10 AM-1 PM (You can also pick up flyers at SFTU anytime during counseling hours (generally 1 PM to 6 PM, Noon to 2 on weekends; call 282-6622 for exact hours).
St. Peter’s Housing Committee Table at Carnaval, Saturday & Sunday. St. Peter’s will have a table at Carnaval and will have plenty of flyers there. You can stop by their table (sorry–we don’t have an exact location yet, so you’ll have to find it) and grab some flyers and then go hand them out.
School Board President Mark Sanchez’s House, 2762 1/2 22nd Street (at Bryant), 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Mark is organizing flyer distribution for NO on 98 and YES on A (the School Parcel Tax). You can drop by his house–right near the parade and festival and get flyers for 98 and A.
Get Out The Vote May 30-June 3
Clear your calendar to help with the most critical part of the campaign–GOTV as we call it. We need as many people as possible to make themselves available the last few days before the election and—especially—as many people as possible who can take all or part of Election Day off. Prop 98 is coordinating with Yes on F, the Sierra Club, SEIU (Yes on Props A & B) and other campaigns to mount a coordinated Get Out the Vote Campaign. We are securing an office in the Mission to work out of for these last few days. More details will follow, but we’ll need volunteers for these tasks:
Office & Prep Tasks–Friday, 5/30: Bagging literature, flyers, maps, making signs, getting food and other stuff to get ready for the big push
Mission Literature Drops & Tabling, Saturday & Sunday, May 31 & June 1, 11 AM — We need to really blanket the Mission this final weekend.
Phonebanking—Saturday, Sunday, & Monday Evenings May 31-June 2 in the evening. We’ll start our big push of calling absentee renter voters who have not turned in their ballots yet.
BART & MUNI Flyering, Monday & Tuesday June2 & June 3–During morning and evening commute times.
Doorhangers Monday Night & Tuesday Morning, June 2 & June 3 – We’ll be distributing a doorhanger in the 200 most progressive precincts in the city (these will largely be in the Haight & Mission).
Election Day, Tuesday, June 3–the big day: we’ll need people to help with visibility (No on 98 banner at Market & Van Ness during morning & evening commute times, people holding signs at key intersections, etc). AT 4 PM we’ll need lost of people to begin knocking on doors of renters who have not yet voted to try to get them to the polls (and we’ll be simultaneously calling others). This is the day we can really use people’s help!!!
And then, at location to be determined, OUR BIG VICTORY PARTY!!!!
