80 Layoff Notices for Paraprofessionals Rescinded (edit this)
The Board of Education’s Ad-Hoc Committee on Personnel started their 5 p.m. meeting at 5:20 p.m. with Commissioners Wynns and Sanchez.
Deb Hirsch, Chief Administrative Officer for SFUSD, stated that with the state’s revisions to the budget and the Rainy Day funds, the District was able to rescind 80 of the original 89 layoff notices that were sent to paraprofessionals. This means that nine paraprofessionals will lose their position at SFUSD at the end of the fiscal year (June 30).
Twenty-two of the paraprofessionals who receive the layoff notices switched to the classification for special education paraprofessionals. Hirsch stated that these paraprofessionals will be able to keep their senority status in their original classification for a period of 39 months in the event that positions in their original classification become open.
Chris Armentrout, Director for Development and Local Government Relations, reported that they have interviewed five candidates out of the 114 applications for the Propositon H coordinator position. The position will pay $60,000 to $83,000. Armentrout stated that they plan to have chosen and finalize their selection in order to announce the selection to the Proposition H Advisory Committee at their next meeting on Thursday. In response to President Sanchez’s questions, the diversity of the final five candidates were one Asian male, one African-American male, one African-American female and two white males.
Armentrout also stated that they had received 18 applications for the position of Environmental Sustainability Coordinator. This position was creaed by the Mayor’s Office. A MOU is being developed between the City and SFUSD for the Dept. of the Environment and the SF Public Utilities Commission to split the cost of the coordinator for a period of two years. The classification will be as an 1809 with an annual salary of $89,000 to $104,000.
The Department of the Environment will be doing the first screening of the candidates next week. The finalists will be interviewed with panelists from the SFPUC, Dept. of the Environment, the Mayor’s Office and the SFUSD.

“Environmental Sustainability Coordinator”… is the Mayor for reals. In a time of a huge budget crises, thanks in part to the sweetheart contracts negotiated with the cops and the firefighters, does our public schools truly need someone making $100,000 to take out the recycling and put on Earth Day events. The Mayor should really focus on the bridging the academic achievement and get his heads out the clouds (or his eyes on the governorship) and get back to basics.
