SF DEMOCRATIC PARTY CONDEMNS DISTRICT 6 ANONYMOUS CAMPAIGN MAIL AGAINST DALY
RESOLUTION OF
THE SAN FRANCISCO DEMOCRATIC COUNTY CENTRAL COMMITTEE
September 27, 2006
WHEREAS, the City and County of San Francisco has enacted a public financing system to insure that all qualified candidates for Supervisor have the opportunity to put their issues before the voters fairly and with equivalent resources; and
WHEREAS, certain groups have expended tens of thousands of dollars for mail, door-hangers and push polling targeting Supervisor Chris Daly, without reporting any of these expenditures to the San Francisco Ethics Commission;

A look at the Campaign Mail in District 6
Here is a snapshot of what is happening in District 6. Along with the anonymous mail, there have been two independent expenditures for Rob Black by the Golden Gate Restaurant Association and BOMA. I do not mean to suggest by including these pieces that these groups are involved in the anonymous campaign. They do go towards the aggregate amount of money spent in District 6.

On the Other Hand, You Can’t Trust Arnold!
Arnold’s Vetoes Hurt California—
But Help His Big Donors
He has hurt us all with his vetoes on key healthcare, education,

the price!
California’s nurses, teachers, and firefighters will mark this record
with a “bill-vetoing ceremony” at the State Capitol—so everyone

More Justice for Gwen Araujo
The nation’s first bill to address use of panic strategies, the Gwen Araujo Justice for Victims Act (AB 1160), was signed into law today by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Authored by Assemblywoman Sally Lieber and Sponsored by Equality California, the bill puts California firmly on record as opposing a defendant’s use of societal bias against their victim in order to decrease their own culpability for a crime.

October Surprise
Am I the only one who thinks that on or about October 24th Bush will announce that the US has captured Osama bin Laden?

Setting Priorities
According to the Examiner today, our mayor has agreed to have a few extra cops around the new upscale Westfield San Francisco Centre.
That effort will include an increased police presence to reduce drug dealing and aggressive panhandling in the area as well as new surveillance cameras at Hallidie Plaza near Powell and Market and the United Nations Plaza near Civic Center. “We’re going to get aggressive with all types of illegal activity,” said Newsom, who added that the efforts would not seek to drive the poor and homeless out of the area.

District 6 and fair politics
I finally checked out the Daly06 site (at Chris’s urging), and I am pleased to see that it has a blog. This site grew out of the blog we did for Robert’s 2004 supervisoral run, which was very well received. I also think it’s a good way to get dialog going occasionally.
I am also amused by the fact that Chris has posted the three hit pieces sent semi-anonymously to District 6 residents. They pretty clearly show that these pieces were sent without any FPPC number. The FPPC number is used to track political spending, and without it, anybody can break the law by (for example) spending more money than they are allowed to. But what’s more important about the missing FPPC number is that without it, we have no idea where this money is coming from.

Should San Francisco own its own wireless network?
I’ve been pretty remiss in covering the ongoing San Francisco WiFi developments. Here’s the latest one, though.
Media Alliance recently commissioned a report from the Institute for Local Self Reliance on what it would be like if San Francisco owned its own wireless network, instead of giving away rights to Earthlink to do it. The report is here in PDF form.

CCPuede Rally
The rally I mentioned yesterday at the corner of Cesar Chavez and Mission went pretty damn well.

There was a great turnout

Most of the cars that drove by were supportive

A bunch of people spoke, including Senior Action Network organizer and CCPuede member Lotchana Sourivong

Ammiano pledged his support (that’s Bike Coalition Director Leah Shahum in the background)

Overall, the event was pretty spectacular
