Feel Good Saturday

by Saskia Traill and Robert Haaland

Scarlot Harlot

Ebb-Tide Café, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and St. James’ Infirmary, and all in one fabulous, lazy, feel-good Saturday. The Ebb-Tide, the best brunch spot in SF, located at 26th and South Van Ness, hosted the Sisters in a benefit for the St. James Infirmary. St. James is an occupational health and safety clinic for sex workers featuring drop-in STI counseling and testing Tuesdays from noon to 3 pm, drop-in medical care, counseling and testing Wednesdays from 6 to 9 pm, and drop-in transgender health care, counseling and testing Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm. As Scarlot Harlot put it during a raffle for video games and gay porn, the police arrest sex workers and then maybe link them with counseling and testing, whereas St. James offers counseling, testing, information, work supplies, food, and clothing before sex workers get arrested—doesn’t that make a lot more sense? They’re broke, though, so send money, tell your Supervisor and call Department of Public Health Director Mitch Katz (554-2600) not to cut it out of the Public Health budget, and show your support next time an event like this comes up.

Pat Murphy

Future feel good events: Pat Murphy, publisher of the San Francisco Sentinel, struggles to keep his community-orientated publication afloat. Soon a group of folks, including us, will be hosting a fundraising reception to help subsidize the costs he incurs. Please email Michael O’Connor at divisadero628@earthlink.net if you are interested in helping or just want to be kept in the loop.
