Going broke to live
Adding insult to injury, more proof that the solution to the health care crisis in this country is not lack of insurance:
So clearly, it's a fine solution to force every Californian to pay more money to these very same insurance companies. It's even better (and twice as Orwellian!) that it's called the "Universal Healthcare Act".
Those of you who live in Sonoma or Marin counties might want to call your boy Joe Nation (D-San Rafael) at (415) 479-4920 and ask him what the hell he thinks he's doing.
As part of a research study at Harvard University, our researchers interviewed 1,771 Americans in bankruptcy courts across the country. To our surprise, half said that illness or medical bills drove them to bankruptcy. So each year, 2 million Americans -- those who file and their dependents -- face the double disaster of illness and bankruptcy. It turns out (not to my surprise, for sure) that if you get sick your insurance company is going to do whatever it can to kill your coverage.
But the bigger surprise was that three-quarters of the medically bankrupt had health insurance.
