Public Internet

I'll report on last night's Media Advocates cable meeting later today, but I wanted to point out an article by Philadelphia's Chief Information Officer (CIO) about the telco companies that are trying to prevent cities like Philadelphia and SF from providing wireless internet to their citizens:
When was the last time they were elected to determine what is best for our communities? If they're really concerned about what is important to all members of the community, why haven't they built this type of network that meets community needs or approached a city to use their assets to build a high-speed, low-cost, ubiquitous network?
Also, according to Ana Maria Montes from the Latino Issues Forum, at Tuesday's California Public Utilities Commission meeting, a San Francisco representative urged the PUC not to limit the city's ability to provide free wireless.
