Nurses kick some Schwarzenegger butt
Today, Schwarzenegger suffered a defeat by the California Nurses Association. A judge ruled that Schwarzenegger could not issue an emergency delay for implementation of new staffing ratios for nurses and patients. Currently, hospitals must provide one nurse for every six patients. Under a new state law that was supposed to go into effect last year, the ratio was to be one nurse to every five patients. But Schwarzenegger issued an emergency delay of the law, bowing to pressure from the insurance industry. When the nurses fought back, sued, and began picketing him, he began to call them special interests and threatened to kick their butt. Too bad Arnie.

Assemblymember Mark Leno at the Safeway picket
Today, Assemblymember Mark Leno had a press conference denouncing Arnie's attempt to call a special election. The election would cost the state $70 million dollars. The reason that Arnie is calling a special election is pretty sleazy. If he waits for the primary next year, there will be limits on how much money he can raise because he will be on the ballot at the same time. If Arnie is on the ballot, he is limited to taking checks for $24,000 from each individual. Since he wants to raise $50 million, it would inhibit his fundraising apparatus. And Arnie, just like Bush, wants to privatize retirement plans so that Wall Street can prosper even more at our expense. Wall Street is planning on funding Arnie's campaign and they don't want campaign finance limits to get in their way.

The Foundation for Taxpayer Consumer Rights has launched an Internet petition campaign: "Governor, Please Stop the Fundraising," in response to Schwarzenegger's recent remarks that the public does not care that he has broken campaign promises to not take money from special interests. Schwarzenegger has raised $40 million from big industry -- about $80,000 each day -- twice as much as Governor Gray Davis, who he replaced for being a cash register politician.
