Stop Schwarzenegger's "Special Election"

California For Democracy, Assemblymember Mark Leno, and State Treasurer Phil Angelides, and many, many others launch grassroots effort to inform the governor that the people of California don't want a $70 million dollar special election.

Powerful corporate interests are pouring $50 million into the Governor's coffers to run ads for an unnecessary, costly special election

WHAT: A joint press conference with Assemblyman
Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) and California for Democracy, a grassroots umbrella organization of local groups and individuals working to bring attention to the severe impacts the Governor's efforts to circumvent the legislature and call a special election would have on everyday Californians.

WHEN: Thursday, March 24, 2005 11 a.m.
WHERE: City Hall, Polk Street Steps

Governor Schwarzenegger claims that the people are the motivating force behind his special election plan, even though Citizens to Save California pay signature gatherers up to $15 per signature to get the 600,000 signatures needed to quality each of his initiatives for the ballot and the million signatures needed for his constitutional amendments.

California for Democracy does not pay signature gatherers and they don't raise money. They are a group of real Californians attempting to send the Governor the message that not all Californians are in support of his idea to spend $70 million on an unnecessary and costly special election in the midst of our fiscal crisis.

The grassroots group hopes to deliver signed petitions to the Governor's Office prior to the deadline for calling the special election.
