The CA Democratic Party Supports Civil Marriage for Same Sex couples

I finally left to go back to my hotel room and just got a call about the vote. The TG healthcare resolution did not get into the top ten priorities. While it’s a bummer, I’m still glad so many had to think about the issue and I’m confident we will get the Executive Board to support it. A historic moment did happen though. The Civil Marriage Resolution did pass. For those who have been frustrated waiting for so long, well, victory is sometimes sweeter when you have to work hard.

The resolution on Iraq, Clean Money, CAFTA, and a resolution supporting the IHHS workers also passed. I’m also happy to report that the Sutter resolution I authored did pass. We will vote on the resolutions again tomorrow.

DNC Chair Howard Dean is the featured speaker for the dinner tonight.

Later, the Stonewall Democratic Club Los Angeles will be having a party that I and others local queers from SF will be attending.

Local queer San Franciscans here at the Convention include Rafael Mandelman, Scott Wiener, Debra Walker, Martha Knutzen, Leslie Katz, Michael Goldstein, Catherine Dodd, Dean Goodwin, Tom Runge, Sal Roselli, Joan Roughgarden, Matthew Rothschild, David Campos, State Senator Carole Migden, and State Assemblymember Mark Leno. And East Bay Democrat Vicky Kolakowshi. The queer contingent worked incredibly hard to make sure the Civil Marriage Resolution passed. Congratulations to everyone involved. It sure is nice to be able to say that the Democratic Party supports Same Sex Marriage.

Naturally, the main topic of the Convention is Schwarzenegger and his policies. The two favorites to replace him here at the Convention are Angelides and Westly with Angelides having a slight edge. Possibly because Westly was so cozy with Schwarzenegger for so long but Angelides came out swinging right after Schwarzenegger’s election. Plus, as one of my colleagues said at the DCCC, “At least Angelides isn’t afraid to be a Democrat.”
