Democratic Convention

The SF Democratic Party Convention is both a schmooze fest and an endurance test on how long you can survive under fluorescent lights.

Low moments: City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo spoke to the LGBT Caucus and never mentioned what he would do for the LGBT community. He informed us that he was running against a Republican who really hates us. Yep. He is better than the Republican and we should probably vote for him, but can’t we do better?

No WIFI connections in the Convention rooms.

Perky straight politicians who told the LGBT caucus “We don’t have enough love in the world.”

Bill Lockyer was afraid to come to the LGBT Caucus. I would be too if I had argued against Equality in Marriage. Speier didn’t show. Frommer either. Both are running for state-wide office so I was surprised.

Lockyer is on a panel tomorrow morning that is billed as “Environmental, Consumer and Civil Rights. Yeah right. We can’t wait to hear Lockyer opine about civil rights.

High moments: The resolution opposing discrimination by heathcare insurance providers of transgender people passed out of committee yesterday. I waited for 3-4 hours until the bitter end. I was the author of the resolution and only the author can speak. When it came up, someone on the committee was about to object to it going forward, when I approached the microphone. As we all know, when you put a face to an issue it makes it hard to ignore or dismiss. She backed off.

The next big hurdle is today at 5 PM. The resolutions committee will pick their top 10 resolutions as the priorities of the party. There are about four trannies at the Convention that we know of-Vicky Kolakowski, Joan Roughgarden, myself, and another woman that I haven’t had a chance to meet yet.

Another resolution I authored on Sutter Health almost got knocked out. One of the committee members tried to say it wasn't a state wide issue. Yeah right. Sutter is the biggest player in California on healthcare. They were one of the main foes of Prop 72 and because of their power in the health care market, they can really gouge consumers. Anyway, I was able to convince the member to back off but we will have a battle again today at 5PM on this one as well.

Phil Angelides got a great reception at the LGBT caucus. People launched out of their seats to welcome him to the stage. I'm told that I wasn't biased in this assessment. (Everyone knows I'm supporting him.)

Tim Redmund from the SF Bay Guardian will be happy. The resolutions committee passed a very strong resolution against the war in Iraq that called for the withdrawal of troops.
