Floor Vote
Democratic Party delegates voted today to affirm the priorities for the party. Someone opposed the Iraq resolution, so it went to a floor vote. Two others were pulled from the consent calendar as well, although only for non-substantive minor changes to language. All the other resolutions were considered part of the consent calendar.
The Iraq resolution passes nearly unanimously
Debate was short. There was only one speaker allowed from each side. The question was called and the vote was nearly unanimous in favor of taking the troops out of Iraq. I think there was one vote against the resolution by the guy who pulled the resolution.
All of the other resolutions passed as part of the consent calendar. Again, the resolutions that passed were: Clean Money, Supporting IHHS workers, Civil Marriage, the Sutter Health Care resolution, Raising the Minimum Wage, Protecting Social Security, Opposing CAFTA, and Rejecting Bolton and Negroponte.
After the Iraq vote, the Convention emptied out pretty quickly.
Final Thoughts: Rafael Mandelman seem slightly disorientated by how easily the Civil Marriage resolution sailed through. He commented on how badly we lost on Proposition 22 and how only four years late, the issue is one of the top priorities of the party. Yep. We won today. But it was four years of organizing by thousands of activists across the state and there are many, many, many battles ahead. I believe Assembly member Mark Leno’s bill, AB 19, will pass in the State Legislature. By the way, his speech on the resolution at the Convention was amazing.
But we will definitely face this issue on the ballot in June of 2006. The right-wingers in this state and across the country are coming after us. I’m glad we are facing the issue head on and not hiding our heads in the sand. They are coming after us whether we move the issue forward or not…
I’m also glad the party took a strong stance on the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. They did a voice vote and the entire room erupted into a strong yes. What a way to end the Convention…
