Shiny Disco Balls
The title of this blog entry is Shiny Disco Balls but it's more about a shining beacon. The San Francisco Sentinel is that beacon. The man behind the scenes is Pat Murphy and people from all over Frisco flocked to Polo's Blue Cube tonight to pay him tribute.
I dropped my $20 spot to get into the joint. The place was filled with politicos and activists of every imagineable stripe. Being the man of the hour, Pat was quite gracious. He seemed genuinely moved by the amount of attention heaped upon him.
Terrance Alan (SF Late Night Coaltion) and Daniella Kirschenbaum (SF Neighborhood Network) emceed the event. There were many people present who operate and/or have been contributors to online publications, blogs and message boards. District Attorney Kamala Harris was first to address the gathering. Assemblyman Mark Leno then presented a certificate from the State Assembly proclaiming April 1, 2005 "Pat Murphy Bow-Tie Day" in California. Supervisors Aaron Peskin and Ross Mirkarimi made comments and that was extent of what I saw before hightailing it back home. Despite the number of the Herb Caen fans that I encountered, I was able to leave with my "Born and Raised in Frisco" hoodie, fully in tact.
