A stumble on the march toward fascism

No, not here, in Mexico:
Federal prosecutors dropped all charges against Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Wednesday. Constitutional term limits bar Fox from running again, and Lopez Obrador, a well-quaffed and outspoken populist known for the government handout programs he champions, is the leading candidate to replace him, according to most public opinion polls.
When Lopez Obrador was indicted, more than half a million people marched in Mexico City.

Mostly unnoted both in the corporate press and in the blogosphere (Nathan Newman has been an exception) has been the rise of the left in Latin America. Hugo Chavez in Venezuela is the obvious example, but also in Uruguay, and, of course, Lula in Brazil.

By historical standards, these guys are not, by any means, raving Marxists, but they do represent a challenge to the IMF-driven cut social services, concentrate exclusively on exports and privatize everything up to and including the air approach that economic orthodoxy demands.
