Unions up in arms...
So when you have a blog, and a journalist gets your quote slightly wrong, you get to say something on your blog I think...
It is minor but in today's Chron, there is an article about proposed Civil Service changes that the Mayor is looking for. Mayor Newsom is looking at eliminating seniority as a basis for lay-offs. The reporter quoted me as saying it was about raises and firing. It seems minor but it isn't totally factually correct. I said raises and lay-offs. And according to someone from the Mayor's office, there may be some differences between the press release and the report.
I genuinely don't think the Mayor gets how getting rid of seniority hurts the workforce.
But the real deal is that we need to sit down and carefully negotiate through a meet and confer process. Not take swings at each other.
On another labor related note, labor is going to Sacramento on Wednesday. There will be a huge rally of teachers, nurses, and working folks who are tired of Schwarzenegger's anti-labor tactics. There is a big fight brewing and I predict we will have a special election this fall. Schwarzenegger's end game has always been redistricting so that he can elect more Republicans. He was using pension reform as a cash cow to fund his effort. Clearly, he wanted to privatize pensions but his most important goal was redistricting.
