SF Board of Supervisors to Pass Resolution Condemning Badlands Discrimination and Urging Penalties “To the Fullest Extent of the Law”

Board members and community leaders hold press conference at 1pm on City Hall steps

June 14, 2005 – Exactly one year to-the-day after complaints about race- and gender-based discrimination by SF Badlands owner Les Natali were first filed with the City’s Human Rights Commission and with other City and State agencies, the SF Board of Supervisors will vote on a resolution “commending the San Francisco Human Rights Commission for its findings of discrimination at Badlands and urging relevant agencies to impose penalties to the fullest extent of the law.” Shortly before the vote, several members of the board and community leaders will appear at a press conference to speak on the issue.

The Board of Supervisors resolution, introduced last Tuesday by Supervisor Bevan Dufty with the unanimous support of the full board, commends the HRC for its work, states that "the Board of Supervisors condemns the discrimination at SFBadlands..." and "urges the City Attorney and all agencies with regulatory authority over SF Badlands and Mr. Natali's other establishments, including the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, and the San Francisco Entertainment Commission, to consult the Commission Finding and to impose penalties to the fullest extent of the law to ensure accountability for discrimination."
