Fighting back on broadband
I wrote a while back about Pete Sessions'(R-SBC) bill to forbid local governments from providing internet access.
This week two senators (Lautenberg and McCain) introduced a much more consumer-friendly bill (PDF), the "Community Broadband Bill of 2005". This bill would prevent states from outlawing local governments' efforts to provide internet access to their citizens.
It is not at all clear to me that this bill has more chance of passing than the Sessions bill, but it's at least a step in the right direction.
