Next Stop Room 200

The next time you see Sharon Johnson, you’ll need to congratulate our newest Commissioner. In case you weren’t paying attention, Sharon ran for the Health Services System Board of the City and County of San Francisco and today the Elections Department certified that she is the winner.

SEIU Local 790 endorsed Sharon and worked on her campaign because of her strong positions on health care and worker’s rights. But so many of the members knew her already from her incredibly principled, progressive work as an aide to former State Senator John Burton, and prior to that, Supervisor Harry Britt.

Last month, when I saw Harry on the Local 2 picket line, I told him that I was working on Sharon’s campaign for the Health Services Board. His response? Well, he was disappointed to hear that we were aiming so low. He encouraged us to aim higher…like Room 200. Well, I have to say, as usual, Harry is right. That is exactly where we need Sharon. (For those who are paranoid, we will wait until 2011.)

Sharon is having a victory party at the Temple Bar on Thursday night from 5:30-7:30. The Temple Bar is located at Polk and Turk Street.
