Our brother is on the picket line today

One of my brothers from the trans community, a former President of FTMI (Female to Male International) and Harvey Milk Club member, is out on the picket line today. He is a clerical worker for the University of California and a member of CUE (Coalition of University Employees) which has been out on the streets for three days in a row on all ten campuses.

There were work stoppages and rallies across the state on Monday and Tuesday. The picket ends today (Wednesday) and a mass rally is planned tonight at the Office of the President, Robert Dynes, in Oakland

The fight is over wages and the University is refusing to grant wage increases recommended by a State-Appointed Fact Finder which said that the University has over 5 billion dollars in its reserves and can afford to grant a raise to its workers.

Clerical workers were outraged when told that two weeks ago the UC Regents voted to make a 61% salary increase to the Treasurer of the Regents ($170,900) but they continue to offer 0% wage increases for the clerical workers for 2003,2004, and 2005, the span of the contract that they are trying to negotiate. The excuse of the University? The State of California did not increase monies to the University system. However, what this argument ignores is that the UC system has $5 Billion in reserve and had $786 million dollars in profit last year.

Doesn't look like much of a budget crisis to me. Worse, the workers are paid 20-30% less in wages than comparable job holders at Cal State University.

GO CUE. You rock and Leftinsf supports you!

Strike organizers expect busloads of fiesty workers to descend upon the Office of the
President at 1111 Franklin Street in Oakland.

Watch out for this picketeer!
